So you want to be a Sybill

Sybill Heritage Profile

For game purposes Sybills are human in appearance. They tend to wear diaphanous clothing and wear some sort of face covering. This can be any type of mask or veil that covers some part of the face. They always speak in riddles or rhymes- the more cryptic the better. These things are necessary if you are going to play one.


 Plot will have a variety of fortunes at the beginning of each game. These fortunes- like all fortunes- have the propensity to change depending on how the PC’s play the game. Depending on your skill as a Sybill you will receive an allotted number of fortunes. You may also be eligible for visions on the spot from plot. As a role play intensive race, you are encouraged to turn this into a business for yourself and create your own visions as well.


Sybills have traditionally been women- but Helike is progressive and includes men who have the Sight. Children who display talent are usually adopted by the Oracle Guild within a town and raised among them to hone their craft in relative safety and comfort. Sybills are often followers of Apollo who has charged himself with their care. In Helike they are also likely to be followers of Poseidon.


Helike has an Oracle Grotto, which houses the official Sybills of Helike. If you don’t sleep there, you will be expected to put in an appearance daily. This is a heritage plot bonus- plot will come to you instead of you finding your own plot. The more active you are in your Oracle Cave- the more likely you will become an integral part of the plotline. If you only show up for 5 minutes every day Plot will most likely miss you. Because our current site is very spread out, we may designate a pavilion in town as a satellite Sybil Grotto during the day. This allows the Sybils to sleep in town rather than the Grotto.


If you want to keep a secret- don’t tell a Sybill. It might be in a cryptic riddle, but it will come out.


Sybills have some inherent Charm abilities which allows them to escape many dangerous situations. They are known for their lack of combat skill. As a Sybill, especially if you are part of the Oracle Cave, you will be expected to attend temple functions and festivals. The first of which will be the sacrifice in the Temple of Poseidon on opening night. Your presence will convey some legitimacy to the Priest reading the entrails and the verdict for the Pharmakoi. 


Sybills have also become adept at creating a Jhati. These are spiritually bonded groups who work and live closely together. They have such a strong connection that should one of them die, the rest of the Jhati is able to locate them on their journey to Hades and could even intercept them. Jhati’s are expensive, but are permanent. A Jhati member may choose to become a part of a different Jhati at any time, but may only be a member of one at a time. 

Note: If you are going to be a member of the official Helike Oracles you may be required to spend a game session as an “initiate”, learning to play one properly. THIS IS A ROLEPLAY INTENSIVE HERITAGE, your visions may suffer if you can’t stay in character.

Heritage Abilities

These are the abilities that make Sybills unique.You get them at the start of the game. It is up to you to role play them successfully.

Active: Mesmerize, Sybills can Mesmerize 1x/day

Passive: Evasion, Sybills can take a quick glimpse into the future and evade 1 attack/day.

Roleplay: Jhati Creation, Role played out ritual that links up to 5 players spiritually. This takes 3 minutes to conduct and must be designed by the Sybill. A Sybill may choose to destroy a Jhati by a different ritual in place of the creation ritual. See the spell Jhati Creation for necessary components of the ritual.

Sybill Example Archetypes

 

Oracle

This is the primary profession for Sybills. It is rare and usually temporary to find a Sybill not in the business of oracles.

Merchant

Sybills may occasionally travel to provide oracular services to towns not blessed with their own grotto.

Spy

In person, Sybills are often overlooked as they do not present a threat. From a distance, Sybills can sometimes get glimpses of important information.
